State and Defense Departments support president’s stance.
The president’s administration recently agreed to strengthen the bilateral alliance with Japan as a counterbalance to actions by the People’s Republic of China. President Biden spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Suga, while Defense Secretary Austin and Secretary of State Blinken spoke with their respective counterparts from Japan this past week.
The White House, State Department, and Defense Department each released statements describing the alliance between the two nations “as the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in a free and open Indo-Pacific.” The president also reaffirmed the “extended deterrence,” or nuclear umbrella coverage, by the United States to Japan.
